If the reader does not stick with this book, they are missing out on a real gem! Be patient and all the pieces come together, beautifully, in the end.

The writing style is unique and essential to the telling of this unusual coming-of age-story about a teenage girl and her handicapped younger brother. Full of family angst, Jayne Anne Phillips writes a believable and sometimes mystical story of relationships, war and the sorrows of everyday life-a story of surviving, living the lives dealt us, but always with hope.
